The Walker's Companion (A Nature Company Guide)
Published in Hardcover by Time Life (May, 1999)
Authors: Elizabeth Ferber, Bill Forbes, David Rains Wallace, Nature Company, and Cathy Ann Johnson
Average review score:

Framing an Environment
If you value field guides, you will love this Time-Life edition of "The Walker's Companion" from The Nature Company. Several highly respected nature writers, including David Rains Wallace and Ann Zwinger, make contributions to this well-illustrated and highly informative text. Those names should give you a clue to the excellent combination of literary and scientific writing that makes this text a must-have reference for anyone who is interested in the environment.

This is a field guide that powerfully combines content with context in a way that makes the information about nature and the environment not only highly accessible, but intrinsically linked to the key social topics that are central issues in both science and social studies. Topics include the history of nature writing and in America, hiking tips, the study of nature throughout the ages, field identification and sketching outdoors. Ecological concepts such as food chains and pollination are concisely described and illustrated in a section titled, "Understanding Nature". Information about every ecosystem from forests, mountains and deserts to farmland and vacant lots is included in the "Guide to Habitats" section. This kind of comprehensive perspective about environment helps the reader to think about and see ecology in very relevant ways.

The format of double-facing pages per topic gives concise environmental information, making it easy to read, index and apply to the reader's world. The guide is an essential home or travel reference as well as a valuable classroom text that would be interesting and accessible for audiences from 10 to 100. The text is so versatile that I have a copy for myself and have ordered a class set for my middle school students for a wide range of class use including nature drawing, research, gardening and environmental education.

Walker's Manual of Penny Stocks
Published in Paperback by Walker's Manual Llc (01 June, 1998)
Author: Harry K. Eisenberg
Average review score:

A Comprehensive Overview of the Penny Stock Market
This book is an excellent overview of the very popular penny stock investment market. I have been investing in penny stocks for about 20 years, and I recommend this book as a valuable resource to anyone who is interested in trading low-priced stocks. Another book that may be of interest to any reader who is considering trading penny stocks is the book, MAKING DOLLARS WITH PENNIES: HOW THE SMALL INVESTOR CAN BEAT THE WIZARDS ON WALL STREET, by R. Max Bowser. Bowser has invested his own money in penny stocks for the past 22 years. This book details his successful system for trading, and includes a summary of results of his purchases; both his successes and losses.

Walking the Somme: A Walker's Guide to the 1916 Somme Battlefields (Battleground Europe Series)
Published in Paperback by Pen & Sword (August, 1997)
Author: Paul Reed
Average review score:

Practical, Informative, Could Have a Better Map
Recently a British friend and I (Yank) followed one of the book's walks on the Somme. The details in the book helped greatly. Beyond the basic description, all the snippets of poetry, diary entries, official history, and photos of soliders and then-and-now battle sites added greatly to the walk. The only thing we felt missing is that the many walks so well described in the book and well-mapped individually are not shown together in one area-wide map, which would help orient the first-time visitor.

Washington Cook Book
Published in Paperback by Golden West Pub (June, 1994)
Author: Janet Walker

A Bountiful Harvest from the Evergreen State
There is nothing quite like living in Washington. There are majestic mountains, the rain forests and shimmering coast lines. There are farmlands that provide bountiful crops. Washington produces delicious juicy apples, cherries, peaches, pears and plums. You can ski in the mountains or find a warm beach, walk in a field of lavender or visit a beautiful waterfall. You can live in the rainy part or you can live where the sun always seems to shine. You can live happily in either place because the food is so good.

The peaches are the best I have ever tasted. The cherries are divine. Fresh corn, onions and strawberries make living in Washington a true pleasure. Yes, you sometimes have to travel to farmer's markets to find the really fresh produce, but it is so worth it. We make a trek to find peaches a few times a year and look for fresh corn every single year for as long as we can find it.

Along with the recipes you will also find some fun facts. There are a few sketches here and there, but the recipes are the feature. You will find recipes for Appetizers, Breakfasts, Soups & Chowders, Salads, Main Dishes, Northwest Seafood, Side Dishes, Breads, Desserts and Beverages.

Swedish Pancakes are a favorite recipe, Spiced Waffles and Granola from a Bed & Breakfast in La Conner also looks delicious. Baked Herb-Garden Salmon is a recipe from Graham Kerr used by permission. My mother loves coconut prawns and she will be delighted that I finally found a recipe.

Now, I am not sure if I am seeing things, but there is a recipe for Northwest Fair Scones, could it really be the same recipe? You can get them at fairs and festivals in the Pacific Northwest and they are often served at the Puyallup fair. You can buy a scone mix, but here is a recipe to try.

Other fun recipes include: It's a Chocolate Pizza, Grand Marnier Soufflé from Canlis Restaurant in Seattle, Strawberry Pie, Rhubarb Cake and The Ultimate Caramel Apple.

Look for fun hints and facts here and there. It is not surprising to read that Washington is the world leader in the production of the raspberry. My grandmother grew them easily in her back yard.A list of Environmental tips to promote cleaning with environmentally friendly products covers just about every cleaning need. A nice index gets you to your favorite recipes fast.

Everyone who lives in Washington should own at least one copy just for fun. There are quite a few fun facts I had never heard of, even though I live here.

Very Black and White
Being an art person, I find that there are tons of books on all the colors of the rainbow. Black and white are just as important to recognize as all of the other colors. It is refreshing to find a book with such a simple concept that is so well thought out - making it all the more impressive! The clever layout of the pages and the wonderful illustrations made this a must have, along with all of this authors other books, in our library and at our playgroup!
